Healthy Holiday Eating Tips

The holiday season certainly presents its own set of challenges when you are trying to stay healthy and on track with balanced eating.  But there are ways to remain mindful of eating without turning holiday ho, ho, ho into ho hum! Here are five simple tips to keep in mind this holiday season.

  1. Eat breakfast. No matter how much food you ate the night before, even if it includes a midnight cookie, skipping breakfast will not help get your “diet” back on track. Eating a well-balanced breakfast will jump-start your day, help maintain energy levels and prevent overeating later on.  Be careful, of course, of the “grab-n-go” breakfasts and turn to oatmeal (ok, try to avoid the packaged, processed flavored kinds), avocado toasts, etc.
  1. Focus on fruit and veggies. This is a message that should always take priority. Embracing fruits and vegetables at all meals and all snacks is not only extremely important for our health, but it’s also great training for our palate. Remember to eat a rainbow of fruits and veggies to make you healthy and happy!
  1. The importance of hydration never takes a holiday break. With the hustle and bustle of the holidays, paired with different eating and drinking habits, the normal daily water drinking often gets pushed to the back burner. Keep your water bottle handy and filled at all times to eliminate excuses.  Not only does it keep you hydrated, but it also helps to keep your body flushed out.
  1. Be mindful. Yes, there are some dishes and desserts that only come around once a year, but that doesn’t mean you need to overindulge. Take the time to fully embrace the food that you are eating with all of your senses and listen closely to your hunger and satiety cues. This will help you achieve a more pleasant eating experience.
  1. Don’t beat yourself up for indulging.  There are a lot of reasons that we eat and that we eat what we eat and emotions play a major role.  Getting down on yourself may likely feed into that and get you headed in the wrong direction.  Breathe, relax, and let it go.  There is always tomorrow to get back on track.
